ALSATIAN DOG BILL

The Alsatian Dog Bill, providing that local authorities may prohibit Alsatian dogs in their districts, that dogs at large in public places or private premises where tradesmen and others call shall be muzzled, and that the breed shall not be imported without the consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs, was put through the Committee stages, read a third time and passed in the Legislative Council yesterday. The Hon. W. 11. Mclntyre (Nelson) sought to have the penalty of £5O for keeping Alsatian dogs not registered under the Act reduced to £2, and in a division the amendment was rejected by 16 votes to seven. A further amendment by the Hou. B. C. Bobbins (Auckland) reducing the penalty to £25 was accepted. The penalty provided for the importation of Alsatians without the consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs was a fine of £2OO or imprisonment for six months. The Hon. W. Berry (Wellington) moved an amendment seeking to reduce the penalty to a fine of £5O or one month’s imprisonment. This was accepted by the mover of the Bill, Hon. C. J. Carrington (Auckland), and agreed to by the Cabinet. Speaking on the thii’d reading, the Hou. V. A. Ward (Wellington) con gratnlated Mr. Carrington on his perseverance and courage in repeatedly introducing the measure.
