Labour Member’s Address
“If we make conditions good in our country, if they are more than comparable with those in other countries, then the young man has a duty to the State,” said Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.P. for Otaki. addressing a meeting bold at Melrose last, night under the auspices of the Labour Party. “I am not however, in favour of conscription.” Air. Lowry milled. “U we have conscription it must be as a very last resort, and, if we conscript manhood, we must also conscript wealth. (Applause.) “'There was a lime when the lootslogger’ was the alpha and omega of warfare .but I wonder if Ihe next war will not be more fierce from Ihe air Ibnu on the ground.” Mr. Lowry said. The Minister of Defence was working t<> strengthen the air force, ami the army was being mechanised as far as possible.
