RESIGNATION SENT FORWARD

Mr. Scrimgeour’s Post

ANNOUNCEMENT BY MR. SAVAGE The announcement that the Controller of the National Commercial Broadcasting Service, Mr. C. G. Scrimgeour, had tendered his resignation to the Government was made by the Prime Minister and Minister of Broadcasting, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Savage, who said the resignation had not yet been dealt with, made the statement during a discussion on a broadcast by Mr. Scrimgeour over the commercial stations on Sunday night.

“I do not think I can begin better than by showing members the resignation of the gentleman who is under discussion,” said Mr. Savage as he rose to take part in the discussion. “I have here the resignation of Mr. Scrimgeour, which is dated l/7/<3B, although it no doubt should be 1/8/3S. This letter reached the Acting-Minister in Charge of Broadcasting, Hon. F. Jones, when he returned from Dunedin last Thursday.” Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Opposition, Riccarton) : Has it been accepted? “No, it has not,” Mr. Savage replied. “That will be a matter between the Controller of Commercial Broadcasting and the Government, but so far it has not been dealt with.” “Not If I Can Stop Him.” “The resignation of the controller is before the Government, but it has not been considered yet,” said Mr. Savage. “The controller is not going out if I can stop him, but I am afraid I will not be able to.” Mr. W. J. Polson (Opposition, Stratford) : What will you do? Mr. Savage: There is one thing we will do—-when the election comes we will fight it on big principles and not on personal grounds and individuals. Members of the Opposition can see the resignation of the controller in his own writing, they can talk to him and any of the station managers and they will' have to come to the conclusion that everything possible that can he done has been done to keep the air free from politics and personalities.”
