AUSTRALIA ROUTS NOTTS

Easy Victory By 412

Runs

POOR SHOWING BY COUNTY

Bradman Equals A Record By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. LONDON, July 19. The Australian cricketers beat Nottinghamshire by 412 runs in the cricket match which was concluded at Trent Bridge, Nottinghamshire, to-day. Australia made 243 and 453 for four wickets, declared (Bradman 144, Hassett 124), -Nottinghamshire’s totals being 147 and 137 (Hardstaff not out 67; FleetwoodSmith five for 39). Bradman (55) and Hassett (67) reopened Australia’s second innings in sunny and cloudless weather. Australia’s over-night score stood at 244 for two wickets, and by the lunch interval to-day this had been raised to 453 for four wickets, when the innings was declared closed. As a result of his innings of 144 today, Bradman was the first cricketer to "reach 2000 runs this season. He also equalled Victor Trumpet’s record of 11 centuries in a tour of England, and there are still 10 first-class matches to be played. A feature of the play before lunch was Hassett’s aggressive and confident batting.' He monopolised the strike and heavily out-scored his partner, Bradman, reaching his century in 110 minutes and hitting thirteen 4’s.

Hitting Recklessly.

Bradman was sedate until he reached 100, but then he began to hit harder, placing skilfully, and the crowd finally saw the real Bradman in action.

Hitting with tremendous force and perfect precision, Bradman scored three consecutive 4’s from Gunn. He pulled Marshall for 6 aud then, hitting recklessly, was caught in the covers. He batted for three hours and hit a 0 and sixteen 4’s. Barnes and Chipperfield had had valuable practice until lunch, when Bradman declared the innings closed, leaving three hours in which to dismiss Nottinghamshire. Bradman surprisingly opened the attack with _Waite and Hassett, the latter, with his first ball in England, getting a wicket. The spin-bowlers, O’Reilly, Fleetwood-Smith and Ward, however, did the major portion of the bowling and routed the county in 135 minutes. Hardstaff alone batted with skill. He cut and drove confidently and reached 50 in 70 minutes. Australia won with three-quarters of an hour to spare. Hardstaff batted for 105 minutes, and his score included five boundaries.
