THORNTON ON TRIAL
Alleged Plot To Kidnap
Lord Nuffield London, July 19/ The trial opened at Birmingham Assizes to-day of John Bruce Thornton, who is charged with conspiring to kidnap Lord Nuffield. An additional charge is brought of inciting Major Ramsden to compel Lord Nuffield to execute a letter .of credit by restraining his person, with intent to defraud Lord Nuffield. Thornton pleaded not guilty. The statement for the prosecution was a recapitulation of that in the Lower Court on June 9. Ramsden stated in evidence that he did his utmost to put Thornton off his plan. “I told him that I considered his scheme impossible, and when the chartered the boat I thought it was time to go to Scotland Yard. I thought Thornton was going to commit a crime, and I could not see any way of stopping it.” The hearing was adjourned.
