Wellington Championship

Games

Two further games were played in the annual Wellington amateur billiards championship tournament at the Billiards. Limited showrooms last nght, before a large crowd. Mr. J. Meldrum was in charge of the games. The first game, between Moses (G.l .O. Pastimes Club) and Smethurst (Wellington Working Men’s Club), resulted in an easy win for Moses, 300-116. Moses has held the New Zealand amateur title for the past two years, and is also the present Wellington champion. Although he made no large breaks, he scored consistently and gained bis 300 in much less than an hour. He made breaks of 20, 27, 39, 29 and 32. Smethurst, who was making his first appearance in a championship match, was unfortunate to meet such a formidable opponent. J. Muir (Queen’s Room) played solidly to beat J. Lee (Victory Room), 300-246. Lee soon forged to the front and had a lead of about 60 points at the 200 stage. His opponent made a great recovery, and with mativ breaks, including 21, 33, 27, 25. 33 and a splendid 50, overtook him and won Lee's best breaks were 27, 30 and 22. Muir is a newcomer to tournament play. To-night at 7 p.m. R. Stuart (Petone Working Men’s Club) will meet L. Moffatt (St. George Room). At 8 p.m. S. M. G. Simpson (G.P.O. Social and Literary Club) will me_et C. E. Peek (Paramount Room). The latter two contestants have previously held the Wellington title.
