The Racing World. FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM

Court Yard Beats Full Of Scotch In Winter Hurdles

ONLY ONE FAVOURITE SUCCEEDS

Totalisator Investments Increase Substantially

(By

THE WATCHER.)

Although backers generally experienced a run of bad luck at Trentham on Saturday,- the third and concluding day of ; the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting was, from the official viewpoint, one of the best the club has ever had. There was almost a record winter attendance and, with fine weather to help, the whole meeting culminated in an outstanding success.. Only one favourite scored, El Meynell in the last race, but three others* ran second and two third. Most of the winners were at good prices, one, Gold Glare, particularly so.

The South Island horses were well, to the fore, winning three of the principal races. Court Yard won the big event of the day, the Winter Hurdles, and the two main flat races, the Winter Oaks and Onslow Handicaps, also went south to Monipere and Rebel Mate respectively. This was the full extent of the south successes on the day, all the other races going to North Islanders. The July Steeplechase was won by the consistent All Irish, who received an ovation from the crowd after his brilliant exhibition of jumping. / The weather was fine but very cold and bleak after a black frost. A northerly breeze sprang up and dispersed the clouds later in the afternoon, but the temperature did not rise appreciably. The track was again heavy and times slow. The very large attendance was reflected in the betting. The total for the day was £79,304, compared with £71.857 on the third day last year, an increase of £7417. The total for the three days was £177,514/10/-. as against £161.818. an increase of £15,696/10/-. This is a substantial success and one which reflects the healthy condition of racing and its control at Wellington. Even Auckland, with its easy access and the fact that it had a holiday date as well as a Saturday last month, did not quite reach these figures. There were several falls during the jumping races, but no casualties. Favourite Falls at First Fence. Valarth, favourite for the hack hurdles, went out at the first fence, to which he had led. He had hit it hard when he went on to win on the opening day. but on thia occasion he came to grief. With the way thus made easier for the others, a mild surprise was in store, Curie improving sufficiently to beat the second favourite, Contract. Laggard, King Mestor and Chaste, and later Greekarma. were most prominent to the home turn, where Curie had moved up. Curie was in front entering the straight and ran on to beat a late run on the rails bj - Contract. Laggard was a very poor third, with King Mestor and Chaste next. Curie should win again on this form, but with Valarth out they were a moderate lot. King Mestor completely failed to produce his second day’s form. Bluffer Beats Favourite. Bluffer, who was having her first meeting for some time, improved with her race the first day to beat the favourite, Sly Fox, in the Novice, and pay a handy price. - Great Legion was clear into the straight, but once on the bad ground he quickly collapsed and Proclamation and Sly Fox, with Yours Truly, came on best.' From the false rail, however, Bluffer put in a solid run and ran on to win comfortably from Sly Fox, with 1 Proclamation a fair third, and Yours Truly fourth. The bunch was headed by Keen Sight and Tom Tom. Bluffer handled the going well. Sly Fox showed improving form at the meeting, and Yours Truly is a colt worth watching for better ground in the’spring, j Keen Sight is also an improver.

W on All the Way. All Irish, ridden by J. Mcßae, who had won the Wellington Steeplechase on Erination. to the front at the first fence in the July Steeplechase and was never headed. At one stage he had a big lead, but seven furlongs from home Clarion Call, whose running, like that of the leader, was featured by brilliant jumping, was close at AH Irish s heels. Clarion Call, however, got into the board fence by the. five furlongs and, although he quickly got going again, it had settled bis chance. He made a game effort to overhaul All Irish, but the bump, had taken a lot out of him and he was finally eased off, although still well clear for second. Outside the two first horses the form was very poor. Bryce Street, the favourite, failed to muster up any dash at any stage and could not beat Monastic for third. This pair would each have been a place further back had Power Chief not fallen at the second last'fence. Kahunoke ran well below the form of the first two days, appearing to go "very short, and none of the others completed the course. . Clarion Call would have won but for hitting that fence. Hack Sprint to Outsider. Gold Glare, who had twice finished fourth in the hack miles on the first two davs, showed appreciation of the shorter distance in the Crofton Handicap by winning handsomely at a good price. Hunting Chorus, Jan Ridd, Jazz Boy. Advance Plane, and Gay Hunting were all prominent to the straight with Gold Glare coming out to the centre of the track. Jan Ridd looked like winning leaving the false rail, but both Advance Plane and Gav Hunting got to him and finally Gold Glare’s finishing run beat them a U. Advance Plane just held on from Gay Hunting for second. Jan Ridd was fourth, then Philemup, Aria, Sporting Gift and Jazz Boy. . , Gold Glare acted too well in the ground for his opponents; The form of Advance Plane and Jan Ridd was very consistent. Court Yard’s Hurdles. Court Yard won the Winter Hurdles decisively, proving the best stayer at the welghTSF”’ ' ”, The favourite, Full of Scotch, put up a great effort. He was'in front all the way. and. although he hit the second fence hard, he held his lead to the last fence, despite the fact that he was taken on by several opponents in the running. Charade was' the first to. try him out and she soon had had enough,, as also had Southern Blood, although he,lasted longer m the picture. Aurora’s Bove then tried put the leader, and she looked likely, entering the straight, but Full of Scotch had her beaten also. Then Court Yard, who had always been handy, made his run, and, once, over the last fence, he drew out to win. comfortably. Full of Scotch was able to. hold off Aurora’s Love for second with: Erination fourth, followed at intervals by Southern Blood, Middle, Chaste, Donegal and Charade. Spender fell early, at the;

third fence, when running iu the rear of a well-bunched field. Court Yard stayed on too well for Full of Scotch, whose effort nevertheless was an excellent one. Aurora's Love ran a good race and Erination looked very dangerous when, after being patiently ridden, ho tried to get. the leaders on the homo turn. However, he did not have it in him, although he plugged on for a close fourth, Monipcre Improves. Ned Cuttie was favourite for the Winter Oats and, although third was his best at the finish, it was a good effort, for he was back in the rear for the first half and never able to extricate himself. Sweet Rose, First Chapter and finally Enge showed up in the lead, others prominent being Alma, Monipere and Liane. Enge was clear into the straight and looked like winning outside the last furlong, but he again stopped badly and Monipere, coming on the rails, .scored well from the rank outsider, Liane, with Ned Cuttie finishing fast into third place. Enge was fourth, followed by Airam, Catalogue and Sweet Rose. Monipere's performance was an improvement on the first, two days, but Ned Cuttie was unlucky in not getting a better passage. Sweet Rose faded out and Lady Montana was never sighted. Airam, as usual, playeel up and got left, but afterward made a good showing. A Keen Struggle. Prince Acre, favourite for the open sprint, did not put in an appearance till the final stages, by which time the battle was between Rebel Mate and Rollicker, the favourite finishing third. Superior Guard, Rollicker, Rebel Mate, Paper Slipper and Maori Song were prominent. early, Triune playing up and getting left. Rollicker and Rebel Mate drew clear from the false rail, and in a stirring duel in which fortunes alternated, Rebel Mate finally drew out a little better effort. After Prince Acre had flashed up in third place, Thala got fourth, followed bv De Friend and Paper Slipper. ‘ Rebel Mate, on whom B. 11. Morris had the mount,, improved and won well. Rollicker also improved on first day's form. Prince Acre and Thala were consistent Paper Slipper ran a good race and should be more prominent for later engagements.

Favourite to Finish.

El Meynell, a hot order for the concluding event, never gave his supporters cause for anxiety. He was in front all the way and although he hung out badly again and finished very wide out, he was never in danger, and won very’easily. Rotoma came from the rear of the field to gain second narrowly from Warehi, with Tidewaiter fourth, then Sunbeam and Happy Landing. El Meynell outclassed his opponents. Sunbeam looked dangerous in the straight when he made a run on the rails, but he stopped badly over the last bit. Details Of The Racing TALAVERA HURDLE HANDICAP, of £300: second £6O, third £3O.
