Scholarship Award To Able

The award announced to-day of a post-graduate scholarship, in science by the senate of the University of New Zealand to Mr. S. N. Slater, M.Sc.. upon which Mr. Slater proposes to undertake research in organic chemistry at Oxford, marks the culminating point of a brilliant career at the University of Otago. Mr. Slater, who is a native of Wanganui, entered the university in 1934 and was the holder of a junior university scholarship. After an outstanding record in pure science and mathematics, physics and chemistry, he was awarded a senior scholarship in chemistry toward the end of 1936. In 1937 he pursued a course of study in research which led to bis gaining his degree of master of science with first-class honours. During 1937 he carried out research in organic chemistry, involving the synthesis of new compounds-—one of the most interesting- fields of chemistry to-day. An account of this research lias appeared in the “Journal of the Chemical Society,” published in London. During the present year he has carried out research in organic chemistry on a subject connected with the essential oils of New Zealand, a particularly important work. At Oxford, Mr. Slater will have the distinction of working under Professor Robert Waynflete, professor of chemistry, Tind one of the foremost living organic chemists. He will leave Dunedin on July 17 and is to sail for England by the Port Hardy on July 27.
