Arrangements For Hearings
AWARDS STILL AWAITED
The Second Court of Arbitration was occupied at Wellington yesterday hearing requests for interpretations of clauses in the New Zealand (except Westland) Freezing Workers’ Award. Eleven applications were dealt with, one being referred back to the disputes committee comprising representatives of the employees and the union, and decision being reserved on the remainder. Mr. C. G. Wilkin (Christchurch) appeared for the employers, and Mr. W. Sill (Auckland) for the workers’ union.
The court will conclude its Wellington sittings on July 15, and will begin hearing disputes in Christchurch on July 20. With the exception of the Wellington nursery gardeners’ industrial dispute, the matters which will occupy the court next week will be further requests for interpretations of clauses in awards, applications to add or strike out parties and appeals against decisions by disputes committees.
The Court of Arbitration will conclude its Otago and Southland sittings on July 15 and will hear two Christchurch disputes before returning to Wellington, where it will conduct a brief sitting and will then move on to Auckland. Pending Awards. A number of awards covering disputes heard by the Second Court of Arbitration are being awaited. It is expected that the clerical workers’ award will be issued in a few days, but it is not yet known when the awards governing the grocery trade and chemists’ assistants will be announced. These disputes were heard in the early part of May. The decision of the court will be of interest to al! sections of the community, the claims of the employees Including a five-day week.
