Brooklyn Club’s Irvine Cup Race WIN FOR C. McCALNAN On Saturday afternoon the Brooklyn Harrier Club held its flve-milc Irvine Cup handicap race at Lyall Bay. The race is tlie same a s was previously halt! for the historical Cooke Cup, which was won outright by G. Prosser year. The Irvine Cup was presented by one of the club S most valued supporters, Mr. Alex. Irvine, who was present last Saturday. About 30 runners faced the starter. Ihe limit man was conceded. Omin. 30sec. by the scratch man, G. Prosser, who made his first appearance for about six weeks. From the start Pedersen and McCalman, off SOsec. mark, set out at a good, steady pace to overtake those ahead followed by Appleby, also off 30sec. Prosser set out 60 seconds later, and by his final time he must have run a tine race. McCalinan, running easily, clapped on the pace, and left his companion. Out in the front. A. Thompson, off Imin. 40sec., was setting a good pace. In the home stretch, McCalman managed to head off Thompson and won a well-judged race. Club members were very pleased, as this was McCalman’s last run with the club—he has been transferred to Te Kuiti. Following are the results:—C. McCalman (30sec.), -llmin. 10see., 1 : A. Thompson (Imin. 40sec.), 41min. 13scc., 2; R. D. MacGregor (Imin. 3Osee.), 42miu. 7 sec., 3; D. Pedersen (30see.), 42min. 37 sec., 4. G. Prosser (scr.), 42inin. 50sec., and G. Appleby (smin. 30sec.), 43min. lOsec., dead-heated for fifth place, and J. Anderson (smin. 30sec.), 43inin. lOsec., came seventh. Fastest times: McCalman, 35.40. 1; Prosser, 3.6.20, 2; Thompson, 36.53, 3; Pedersen, 37;7, 4. At the conclusion of the run, Mr. Irvine addressed the runners and presented the cup to the winner. Baptist Club The Baptist Harrier Club held a run from the Berhampore Baptist Church on Saturday. The trail led up Rintoul Street South, along Levaud Street and then up Houghton Valley Road, breaking off to cross the links, and then up to the top of Mt. Atkinson. The runners then went to the right on to the road, coining round and ascending to the trig station. From there they ran along the road and down a very -boggy valley into Island Bay Parad_e. A run-in of 100 yards was held from the corner of Luxford Street, K. Mai and D. McFadyen dead-heating for first place, and R. Tonson coming next. Presbyterian Club The Presbyterian Harrier Club held a ru.n of six miles from the Khandallah Presbyterian Church on Saturday. The trail led from Khandallah down the •path to the foot of the Ngahauranga Gorge, up the road to Johnsonville, across the railway and back over the hills, descending at the Khandallah reserve; then home by road. There were five packs, a large number of members turning out, but only the medium pack kept entirely to the correct trail. The run-in resulted :P. Bay, 1; F. Tomlinson, 2; CSeelye, 3. Methodist Club More than 30 members of the Methodist qlub followed a good trail laid by F. Thorley, J. Walker and V. Cresswell from Ngaio Methodist Church along Khandallah Roadj through Khandallah reserve, and up on to the hilltops, thence back to the church. The members ran in four packs, led by W.. Baker, C. Thompson, T. Hinde and D. Walker. The racing pack merged into the fast pack after two miles had been covered. and to gain further training ran an extended trail of their own choosing after the paper had been followed to its limit. In this pack A. Hurren, G. Harris, and W. Scott ran well, with J. Kelly and R. Ingrain showing improvement and D. Walker and J. McKinney maintaining their form. Next -Saturday a club run will be held from the Lyall Bay Surf Club sheds' for tho.se not participating in the Vosselcr shield race. Scottish Club For the first time for many seasons the Scottish club held a run from Rona Bay on Saturday, this proving to be a pleasant change from the courses about the city. A pack of eight runners, uuler A. Bourgeois, left the Rona Bay bathing sheds at 2 p.m., and made the trip to Pencarrow lighthouse and back. Thirty-live runners set oft in two packs for a very enjoyable run which led through Eastbourne to Muritai Park, then up the hill and down to Butterfly Creek reserve. After passing this point a stretch o£ nearly two miles of boggy country was encountered, but better going was found on the Gollans Valley Road. The runners had a good run home through Eastbourne and arrived back bespattered with mud. Members and friends were the guests of Messrs. W. Ballanlyne, R. Ballantyne and T. Bartlett at afternoon tea served in the Fire Brigade Hall. Next week’s event is the contest for the Vosseler Shield at Lyall Bny, when tjie club will defend the trophy. Varsity Club On Saturday the Varsity club ran from St. Alban’s Church Hall, Rona Bay. The trail led along the (op of the hill to Pencarrow Light, returning along the beach, the total distance being about 14 miles. The attendance was not very large, but all present covered the whole distance and the members as a whole showed very welcome signs of training. Olympic Club The Olympic club's run was held from the residence of Mr. and Mrs, A. B. Chappell, Woburn Road. Northland, more than 30 members participating. The runners were divided into slow and fast packs under the leadership of A. W. McNaught and E. H. Lovatt respectively, and they followed an excellent nine-mile trail laid by W. Watt and A. B. Chappell. The trail led down to Wilton Road and along this road to "Wilton’s Bush. After passing some of the way through Wiitpn’s Bustf the trail led up a spur and then Io (he top of a ridge. This ridge was followed for some distance, some solid climbing being necessary in' parts. A descent was made part, of the way down ;i gully on the western side of the ridge, and the paper then led northward along the . side of the hills. The runners then regained the top of the ridge and enjoyed some good running when descending into Ngaio. The back road was followed, leading round past Archibald’s farm and down to I lie entrance to Wilton’s Bush. The trail then led up Blackbridge Road and back along Wilton Road to Northland. After the run the members were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chappell at afternoon ten. j C.Y.M. Club [ Thirty members of the. C.Y.M. club . were the guests of Messrs. J. McPhee and A. Ciillngb.’in at a run held from the St. Paul's Churcli Hall, Lower Hutt, on | .Saturday. A. Thomas and A. Callaghan set a

good trail leading from the ball over the pipe track, due north along the Wainui Range and back home down the Waitin' pipe track, due north along the Witinui Road. Good time was made on the downhill run and the fast, pack ran very solidly and caught most of the slow pack on the home stretch. R. Naismith was first home, followed by K. Brooker and G. Tynan. Hutt Valley Club Fifteen members. of the Hutt Valley club, divided into two packs, followed an excellent, trail of eight miles, laid by A. Mack, on Saturday. Leaving the Hutt Park, the paper led on io Petone Beach via the pipe bridge, along the beach as far as the Grand National Hotel, continuing up the .Mill Stream for some distance, ascending the slopes reaching the Korokoro road, down London Rond, and back to the starting point, via White's Line, crossing the railway bridge, and finally the I-Jutt "River stopbanks. r rhc trail provided' plenty of variety, griicisy swnmpltinds, heavy sand, several fences nnd a good measure of road.
