THE MAHIA SEA-SNAKE
Cast Being Prepared For
Exhibition
A plaster east <Jf the sea snake recently killed at Mahia is being made by the Dominion Museum taxidermist Mr. Charles Lindsay, and will be on exhibition at the museum lit about a fortnight’s time. Tile snake arrived at the museum in a bottle of methylated spirits. As in this form, although perfectly preserved, it was not suitable for advantageous exhibition, Mr. Lindsay made a mould impression of the snake with .such ex aetitude that every seale, and even the reptile's eye, was accurately reproduced. From this he will prepare Ills cast, which will be coloured to match the snake and will be practically indistinguishable from the actual creature.
The snake is of very vivid coloration. for. although the dark olive green of the back is somewhat sombre, tills is more than compensated for by the vivid yellow underside. There Is no doubt that it will make a striking exhibit. and. if only because of the circumstances in which the original snake was found, one that will attract a good deal of interest when it is placed on sliow. •
