ROAD CYCLING
Ponekc Club’s Time Trial
The Poneke Amateur Cycling Club held a novel race iu tbc form of a twonian time trial ou Saturday, starting and finishing .at Kaiwarra. Thirteen teams competed, and all rode off scratch, the prizes going to the three fastest teams. To make the teams evenly balanced the handicapper put a scratch and limit rider together, followed by a short and a long handicap man, the teams being all selected on .this principle. This left the middle-markers paired off, and it was generally anticipated that they would be at an advantage,’ but the winning team consisted of R. Dutton and Bowsie, they being in general racing a scratch and limit rider respectively. Their effort was a good one, Dutton doing the bulk of the pacing, Bowsie being nursed to the finish bv his more powerful team-mate. His ride was his best this year. The second and third teams were evenly matched, G. Howard and D. Evans beating G. Gpey and F. Huxford by the small margin of- two seconds. The teams left at minute intervals and could not accept pace from other teams. Results were:—
R. Dutton and D. Bowsie, 54.29, 1 ; D. Evans and G. Howard. 55.22, 2; F. Huxford and W. Goey, 55.24 2-5. 3; F. Blackett and N, Blair, 56.21, 4. Club riders will be racing at Petoue in, the Petone club's open- fixture next Saturday. Entries will close at West’s cycle shop on YVednesday. Port Nicholson Club 'The Port. Nicholson Amateur Cycling Club held 33-mile senior and junior races at Island Bay on Saturday. Fourteen seniors and nine juniors started. In the senior race E. Robinson showed good form. The break men made full use of their handicap, two minutes, and at the end of the second lap had gained 30 seconds on the scratch men, Disley and Amey. The Sowerby brothers found the pace too hot, as did K. Wilson (amin.) and A. R. Stevens (3min.). The two limit men, M. Williamson and R. Gestro, rode a good race, only to be caught a mile from home. These two should be heard of as the season progresses. At the end of the second lap Arney dropped Disley and made up a considerable amount of the leeway, but found the combination of J. Wilson and W. Keighley too good. At this stage it looked as if Arney might get the time honours, but oh the adjustment at the finish he was nine seconds out. the long solo ride being too much. Results were:—
J, Wilson (2min.), 85.20, 1 : E. Robinson (Siiiin.). 91.20 1-5, 2; W. Keighley (2min.), 85.20 4-5, 3. Fastest times:#. Wilson, 1; W. Keighley, 2: G. Amey, 3. Iu the junior event both the scratch men.
