Lower Values Of .Exports
The value of Australian wool exports for the 10 months ended April was lower by £14,366,000 than for the corresponding period of the previous trade year. Exports during the period amounted to 2,072,966 bales, valued at £36,384,394 in Australian currency, compared with 2,310,876 bales, valued at £50,750,823, exported in the corresponding period last year. Empire purchases were larger, but their value was less, while foreign purchases dropped both in quantity and value. The Empire bought 883,974ba1e5, valued at £15,935,050, compared with 879,323 bales, valued at £18,816,747. Foreign purchases were 1,188,992 bales, valued at £20,440,308, compared with 1,431,553 bales, valued at £31,934,076. The rise in Empire purchases was due to increased exports to the United Kingdom. Britain took this year 878,151 bales, valued at £15,820,243, as against 870,790 bales, valued at £18,621,756 in the 10 months ended April Inst year. There was a fall in the purchases of 'other Empire countries. Restricted bilying by the United States was mainly responsible for the fall in foreign purchases. To April 30. 1937, America took 252,097 bales, valued at £6.671,628; to April 30, 1938, she bought only 14,115 bales, valued at £332,036. Japan's purchases fell from 242,300 bales, valued at £6,350.897, to 190,414 bales, valued at £3,297,351. The only country that has substantially increased purchases is France, which bought 345,912 bales, valued at £5,540,387,. compared with 226,534 bales, valufid at £4,314,091, in the corresponding period of the last financial year.
