OPENING OF SESSION

Tentative Arrangements

For June 29

IMPREST SUPPLY MEASURE

Although the date has not been definitely fixed ,it is very probable that the final session of the present Parliament will open on Wednesday, June 29 This statement was made last evening by the Primo Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, who said he expected that the session would last about three months. The opening day’s proceedings wi.l be confined to the usual ceremonial and pageantry, in which the Governor-Gen-eral, Viscount Galway, will take parr. An Imprest Supply Bill will be introduced and dealt with the following day. It may be that there will be a mutual party understanding to curtail discussion on this Bill, for the Address-in-Re-ply debate, which will commence • the following Tuesday, will give members ample opportunity to express their views.

The assembling 'of Parliament in June represents a return to the normal practice of opening the session about the last Thursday of that month. So far no legislators or past legislators have died during this recess, and if this state of affairs continues to the opening day it will mean that Parliament will be opened for the first time for many years without the necessity for, special expressions of sympathy. Mr. Savage said yesterday that it was usual for members to review the work of Parliament during the last session, and he expected both sides of the House to debate both the Address-in-Reply and the Budget fully. The proceedings in the House would be broadcast and members would be able to talk direct to their constituents. “I see no reason why the debates should be curtailed,” he said.
