Mount Victoria Tunnel

(From “The Dominion,” May 31, 19t3.)

For some time past residents of Hataitai and Kilbirnie have been keenly interested in getting a second tunnel through Mount Victoria to take the traffic, apart from that which is catered for by the munieipsl tramways. The residents, speaking through the Hataitai Municipal Electors’ Association, have been urging the provision of a short cut through the hill. The association recently commissioned Mr. Leslie Reynolds, C.E., to report on the proposal, which report has just been handed to the association. He states that he is convinced that, the most suitable site, keeping in view the locality, for the western end of the tunnel is near the terminus of Patterson Street, thence running in a direct line through the ridge to a valley on the Town Belt immediately behind the Hataitai tramway waiting shelter in Moxham Avenue. [The report described a tunnel practically the same as the one since constructed, and approaches! like those existing or projected.] The Public Works Committee has. decided to recommend a cantilever bridge across Sydney Harbour from Dawes Point to Milson’s Point, carrying four railway lines, two roadways and one footwav. The cost is estimated at £2,750,000.
