MUNICIPAL MOTOR CAMP

Wellington’s Need For Centennial Year

Or. W. Duncan, the new chairman of the reserves committee of the Wellington City Council, is firmly of the opinion that. Wellington must be provided with ti motor camp for centennial year. In any case, he said yesterday, the city should have a permanent motor camp like any other city iu New Zealand or Australia. Though a good site was offering, on the Town Belt at the head of Russell Terrace, there did not seem to be any particular enthusiasm in the city council about pushing forward with the project. It would cost money, of course, but some motor camps were so popular that, they actually paid their way. Indeed, though there was a splendid municipal motor camp at Rotorua there were also two private ones, which were well patronised every summer. Yet Wellington had none at all. The.estimates for the year had to lie considered at an early date, and it was his intention to propoA- that a sum of money be set aside for the lay-out and construction of a motor camp suitable to the dignity of Wellington on the area of Town Belt mentioned. That was the only site reasonably near the city where there was room for expansion, and in view of the certain demand for a camp in 1940, be considered that the council would be doing the right thing in making this provision. It would help the city of Wellington, would help the exhibition, and would be a convenience to motorists used to camping in other parts of New Zealand.
