ROYAL SHOW IN WELLINGTON

Centennial Proposal SUPPORT IN SOUTH Bv Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, May 27. A remit suggesting that the Royal Show be held at Wellington during the celebration of the New Zealand ceiitetmry was adopted for submission to the Royal Agricultural Society by the southern district council of the society to-day. It was stated that it had been suggested that the show be held at Trenthnm racecourse if no other site is available. Application will be made by the council for the 193 V Royal Show to be held at Invercargill in the second week of December. The secretary, Mr. A. E. Cameron, said the last conference of the society bad agreed that if it was not possible to pay freight on stock sent front one island to the other, a representative .show could not be expected. If the 1939 Royal Show was held at Invercargill. there would be few exhibits from the North Island unless breeders were given some encouragement by the payment of freight on exhibits. The Government had made a grant of £5OO for the first Royal Show, had increased it to £lO9O for several years, reduced it gradually in 1930 and 1931. and given nothing for the next live years. Last year £-50 had been granted and application had been made Io the Meal Board for a grant of £5OO. No reply had yet been received to this application. The chairman, Mr. J. Presioii, Waikouaiti, said the cost of freight on exhibits was very heavy, ano breeders required some assistance. A Waikato breeder would be :il a great ■ lis.-idv.-iu-tage in exhibiting at the Invercargill Royal Show because of heavy freight costs. It was decided I hat delegates to the annual conference of the society in Wellington .should ask for freight to be paid on exhibits.
