"POUNDS” AND PENCE
A certain pound-keeper in a country district in the South Island caught and impounded the local doctor’s goats. To his surprise the doctor made no effort, to regain them bj’ paying the customary fine of eighteenpence and nt the end of the month the pound-keeper put them up for auction. The doctor was the sole bidder at the sale and bought his goats back for a shilling each. He had not only saved sixpence a head on them but had obtained a month's free feed for the goats into the bargain.
