Criticism Of Government
Sir,—in your issue of May 24 the Hon. R. Semple said he "strongly resented the political attack on the road safety campaign.” and "regarded road safety as being above political mire.” This sounds very nice coming from the honourable
gentleman, especially when one remembers the attitude of the Labour Party during the depression when they were invited to join the other two parties in the House to do the best for the country during the depression. Even the Labour Party in England makes defence a political question.
The point I wish to make is that the Labour Party says they have a scheme which will obviate any further depressions in New Zealand. Why did they not come forward with this scheme when the workers were suffering during the last depression ? Why did they keep this scheme back and allow cuts in wages? Why did they allow 60,000 workers to be on relief wages? • Surelv the .sufferings of these people so much talked about by the Labour Party during the last election were above the political mire. 'They were allowed to suffer while the Labour Party kept their scheme to themselves so that they could attain office. Perhaps after all it is like the national superannuation scheme —a . glorified old age pension, a glorified relief at the expense of those working. It seems to me that anything criticising the Government is political, but one cannot forget, their rantings and abuse when in opposition.— I am. etc..
PUZZLED RELIEF WORKER Upper Hutt, May 24.
