EMPIRE DAY
Wreaths Placed On Statue
Of Queen Victoria
In celebration of Empire Day yesterday wreaths were placed on the statue of Queen Victoria in Cambridge Terrace, Wellington, by the president of the Wellington branch of the Royal Empire Society, Mr. L. O. 11. Tripp, and 'by the president of the Wellington branch of the Victoria League, Mrs. J. A. Doctor. The Victoria League’s wreath, which was shaped in tbe form of a large V, formed from laurel leaves, was made by the treasurer of the Wellington branch of the league, Mrs. C. E. Corrigan, and Mrs. C. Carter.
The Royal Empire Society’s representatives were: ‘Sir Thomas Wiltord. Sir James Grose, Messrs. L. O. H. Tripp, I. Macarthur, W. A. Armour, J. D. McMillan, Ernest Hunt, M. Barnett, C. A. McLeod and W. L. Jacobsen and Dr. Graham Robertson. Representatives of the Victoria League were: Mesdames J. A. Doctor, L. 0. H. Tripp, Hampton Brown, D. Rodie, A. A. Crammond, G. A. King, C. Carter, G. Seymour, 11. McGill, A. M. Christophers, Misses E. Ford and W. Thompson. DUNEDIN GATHERING By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, May 24. The principal celebration of Empire Day in Dunedin to-day was a Victoria League “at home” under the chairmanship of the Hon. W. Downie Stewart. The speaker for the afternoon was Principal Dickie, who chose as the subject of his address “The British Empire and Democracy.” Lady Ferguson also spoke, dealing mainly with the question of the service which the league is ever ready to render to those of its members who travel abroad.
Speaking of her recent visit to Great Britain, Lady Ferguson the guidance and help that was given by headquarters of the league in London. She urged any who contemplated a visit to the Homeland to make the fullest use of the facilities provided by tbe league for its members.

The Empire Day commemoration service was held in warm sunshine at the foot of the Queen Victoria statue in Albert Park. The speakers included the mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, and Captain Rivett-Carnac, commander of H.M.S. Leander. Official wreaths were laid by the mayor and representatives of various organisations.
