EXPANSION OF EMPIRE
Part Queen Victoria Played
SPEECH BY LORD GALWAY By Telegraph—Prese Association. Auckland, May 24. The important part played by Queen Victoria in the counsels of Europe was stressed' by the Governor-General at the annual dinner of the Royal Empire Society. Her influence had been all to the good, being directed toward keeping the peace, ensuring that justice ami order were maintained, and seeing that the influence of England held a predominant place. • When she came to the Throne it was discredited, as were its occupants, and the Empire hung loosely together. At her death the Crown was in a stronger position than ever before in British history, while she had played a great part in the expansion of the Empire and in bringing about closer ties between the component parts.
Tn the present difficult times the Empire was a solid rock on which the prosperity of the world now greatly depended. His Excellency added that he trusted that the links of Empire would be maintained and strengthened so that if any emergency arose they could feel certain that the various units would hold together, for all their prosperity was bound together with the Empire.
