London, May 9,
The masters of thirteen British merchantmen, including the Staneroft, the Stanbrook and Greatend, anchored at Valencia, telegraphed to the Foreign Office as follows: “If British ships arc to trade to Spain under the Non-Intervention Agreement it is necessary that a neutral zone be allotted in every harbour for the handling of legitimate cargo. “The attacks on British shipping are now ruthless and absolutely deliberatebthe latest example being the Greatend, which is now sinking. “The personnel and crews of the British ships in the harbour, numbering 400. join the protest and earnestly desire immediate action.”
