New Zealanders Win After Superb Exhibition
(Received April 25, 7.30 p.m.) Sydney, April 24.
Giving a superb exhibition, the New Zealand polo team won the Australasian Gold Cup polo tournament, defeating_New South Wales Town and Country Whites in the final by 9 goals to 4. Their victory was decisive and was due primarily to the speed and hardiness of the New Zealand ponies, which easily outpaced those of the Australians.
The New Zealanders took command of the game from the start of the opening period and went into the lead by 2 goals to nil. After this it was just a question by how much they could win. Although the home men-played cleverly, they could not live with the pace of the opposition.
K. Peake was easily the outstanding player on the field, and, although he received fine support, he was really responsible for the win. His display equalled anything ever seen in Australia. Mackenzie gave his customary sound display, and G. Peake was at the top of his form and secured two really brilliant goals. Nolan was not so prominent as in past matches and in the last few minutes his pony broke a fetlock.
G. and R. Ashton were the best of the opposing team, which had many chances but lacked accuracy. ' The crowd was most enthusiastic at the finish, invading the ground and shouldering K. Peake. The win was very popular on all sides, and the big crowd was delighted at the sparkling display of the New Zealanders. The scorers were: New Zealand, K. Peake four, G. Peake four, Nolan one; New South Wales, G. Ashton, Horsley, R. Ashton, and McLeon one each.
