The Rev. F. B. Meyer (the well-known English Noncomformist minister) has received a cabled message from the Federal Council of the Churches of America stating that all are responding to the appeal from China that prayer-, be offered up for the success of the republic. The Rev. Lord William Gascoyne-Cecil, rector of Bishops Hatfield, said two honourable motives were impelling China. The first was patriotism, China fearing the risk of disruption and a humiliating form of foreign domination. She also desired recognition as a nation. The second motive was respect for Western religion. This was an appreciation of the values of Western thought regarding the anti-opium crut-'ade. It was significant that the English bitshops had invited the clergy to offer up intercessions. Great. Britain’s and America s response to China’s appeal for. intercession have created a deep impression in Paris, lhe newspapers state that the new movement forges a new link between East and West.
