FATAL FIRE

Pensioner’s Hut Burnt By Telegraph—Press Association. Greyniouth, April 25. When neighbours discovered a hut on fire at Noble’s Claim, Waipuna, early on Saturday morning, they found no trace of the occupant, Henry Alfred Tetley, aged 63, miner’s pensioner. The police were communicated with, and Constable A. Honey, Ahaura, on his arrival, recovered charred remains from the fire. It is believed that Mr. Tetley left a candle burning in the hut, a wooden building, and fell asleep, upsetting the candle, and causing the fire. Mr. Tetley, who had been a victim, of miners’ phthisis for the past three years, was formerly engaged at Blackwater Mine, Reefton.

He leaves a sister in Australia, and it is believed there is also one at Waihi. A verdict of death by suffocation was returned at the inquest at Ahaura this morning.
