“HUSBANDS’ & WIVES’ DAY”

Rotary Club Luncheon Yesterday was “husbands’ and wives’ day” at the Wellington Rotary Club. On this day every self-respecting Rotarian is supposed to take his wife to luncheon—or take the consequences. These consequences lie in the hands of the president, who stands no nonsense. Yesterday all (Rotarians who had omitted to bring their wives were summoned -to their feet, and when it was seen how many were in this category the president, Mr. R. Telford, rubbed his hands metaphorically. Then, with infinite compassion he requested those whose wives could not possibly attend through not being well enough, to be seated. AR subsided save three. This wa 6 too much for Mr. Telford, who at once became the stern president and fined each 2/6 for the alleged delinquency. During the session the president announced that the appeal for financial support for the Boy Scout movement had resulted in £153/7/- being subscribed, which was considered quite a good effort. He mentioned the name of Mr. F. Vosseler as one who had done conspicuously good work in “raising the wind” tfor the Boy Scouts. Occasion was taken to say good-bye to Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Martin, who are leaving on a holiday trip to Australia, and to Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Baldwin, who will leave for England by the Rangitata to-morrow. Mr. Baldwin said that he had three brothers In England whom he had not seen for 50 years.

The president paid a compliment to the wives present, and thanked them for having graced the proceedings. On behalf of the club he thanked those women who had assisted th» Rotary movement in many ways.

Songs were contributed by Messrs. Harison Cook aud H. F. Wood, Mr. J W. Carr presiding MAhe. aiapo.
