GOLF CONTROL
Monthly Meeting Of Council NEW CLUBS AFFILIATED Three new clubs were admitted to affiliation at the monthly meeting of the council of the New Zealand Golf Association this week. They were Rai Valley (Marlborough), Scargill (Christchurch), mid Tramways (Wellington). The Foxton club’s resignation was accepted, owing to the club being unable to carry on. Mr. W. A. Kiely presided, and there were also present Messrs. W. E. A. Gill, J. C. Peacock, J. 11. Drake, A. R. Sclanders, C. A. Burgess, and G. O. Sutton (secretary). The Ohaupo club notified that it had changed its name to “Lochiel.” New Zealand Championships. The Otago club wrote that its committee approved of suggestions made by the council regarding the New Zealand championships programme, and the preparation of this will now be proceeded with. An important difference between this year’s fund previous years’ programmes is that this year all stroke and bogey handicaps for amateurs havg been deleted and “flight” matches substituted. It was reported that J. A. Clements, professional to the New Zealand Golf Association, would start coaching with the Greymouth club on April 26, and would then proceed to Reefton. After the West Coast trip had been completed, he would go to Southland to fill bookings already made and others which it was expected would be asked for. T. Green would begin at Waiuku on April 22. and after three weeks there would go to Apiti, thence to Marlborough and North Canterbury. The Rotorua club advised that it would be requiring the services of a club professional as from May 1. Third-party Insurance. Special meetings of the council dealt With the matter of the new policy, and decided to again give the business to the General Accident, Fire, and Life Assurance Corporation, Ltd., who had given satisfactory answers to a number of questions submitted by -the council. The policy will operate, for third-party risk only, and not personal accident cover, from March 31, 1938, and full details are being sent to all jjlubs which ask for them. A request wns made. by a group of Wellington clubs that the association should arrange a policy to cover pure accidents where negligence is not involved, but after consideration it was decided that this was hardly a function of the association, and that it was open to individuals to arrange such a cover if they required it. ' Centennial Tournament. Messrs. W. A. Kiely, J. C. Peacock, and J. H. Drake were appointed a subcommittee to look into the cost of travel for visiting competitors to the proposed centennial golf tournament at Wellington in 1940. . Practice Shots. In November last the council wrote to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, suggesting that it might be well if all practice shots during the play of a round were prohibited—not merely those duriug the play of a hole, but the Royal and Ancient Golf Club does not consider any alteration of the existing rules desirable. The matter of a disqualification in the last open at Hamilton was mentioned ■to tlie Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews merely as a matter of interest, and not for a decision, (as the council had no doubt whatever on the subject). However the Royal and Ancient club saw fit to add that the decision given at Hamilton was upheld. Standard scratch scores were allotted as follows: Diamond Harbour, 69; Pahiatua, 72.; Rai Valley, 66.
