SPORTS FACILITIES IN WELLINGTON
City Council Proposal SCHEME FOR BODIES TO RAISE MONEY A proposal to ask each sports body to arrange a special benefit fixture during the 1938-39 season, the proceeds to be devoted to a fund to be subsidised by the council up to an amount to be decided later, to provide additional sports facilities, was adopted by the Wellington City Council last night on the recommendation of the reserves committee.
Cr. R. McKeen, M.P., said that in regard to sport generally various organisations had been formed recently to encourage it among boys. He referred to two wrestling organisations, which had difficulty in getting facilities for the boys. That was a case where such a fund would be very useful. He also thought that the Government should be called upon to utilise the funds the Minister of Internal Affairs. Hou. W. E. Parry, was proposing to set aside, for this purpose.
“This proposal, if properly taken up by the sports people, could be very valuable,’’ said Cr. C. H. Chapman, M.P. If football, Jcricket, hockey, tennis and swimming took it up with enthusiasm a very large sum could be raised. It would be an opportunity for the sports bodies to help themselves. If the council subsidised, to a reasonable extent, the money raised then additional grounds could be provided.
The mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said he thought the suggestion an excellent one. “We have always been ready to. help those who help themselves,” he said. The chairman of the reserves committee, Cr. W. Duncan, suggested that the incoming committee should call a meeting of sports bodies to consider the scheme.
