LEAGUE LOANS TO AUSTRIA
What Will Become Of Them? As yet nobody has brought up in Parliament the probable effect of the new Austro-German situation on the terms of the large loans Austria has had in the post-war years, says a writer in the London “Daily Telegraph. Raised under the auspices of the League of Nations, these loans were made on certain conditions that may now no longer be observed. Chief among the conditions of the 1933 loan was that there should be no alienation of Austria’s independence, and no Customs union for 20 years. It was also stipulated that there shoujd b e balanced Budgets and progressive abolition of exchange controls. Britain and France are the chief guarantor Governments, but Italy also has substantial creditor interests. The 1923-43 loan of £33,000,000, of which the British share was £14,000,000, was successfully converted in 1934 to a lower rate of interest, the loan being extended to 1959. Britain’s share of the 193353 lean of £9,000,000 was £4,000,000. France guaranteeing £t similar amount -and Italy £1,250,000.
