MAN RUN OVER BY TRUCKS

Fatal Westport Accident By Telegraph—Press Association. Westport. April 4. William Ernest Bird, aged 43, a waterside worker employed by -the Railways Department, lost his life at 4.50 p.m. to-day when breaking down a rake of trucks of coal for loading. He uncoupled three trucks and intended to hold those following, but he either slipped or his foot was caught in the points and he was run over, a leg being severed from the hip. Death was apparently instantaneous. Mr. Bird was a native of Tam worth. Staffordshire, and had been 15 years in New Zealand and was prominent in local Labour circles, being a Labour nominee for the coming borough council elections. He was a married ma" with two sons. ,
