PINK PAVEMENTS
Coloured Flagstones In Wellington USE FOR OLD BRICKS Wellington citizens will have noticed In the footpath paving operations in Willis Street and Lambton Quay lately a variety in tone as compared with the usual grey concrete flagstones which are so characteristic of Wellington. The new flags have a warm pinkish flush that is distinctly attractive to those with a colour sense. They were first tried out on the footpath pavements surrounding the new railway station, and have met with such general approval that all the footway flagstones are now being given the same inviting finish. There is no secret in the recipe for the new pink pavements, which are being made in a large shed in the corporation yards at Clyde Quay. Every now and then consignments of bricks from old jobs or buildings that have had to be removed fall into the hands of the city engineer. At one time these brickbats were thrown Into the harbour in connection with reclamation work, or into a rubbish tip; but with the new craze for coloured concrete, and what can be done to relieve the monotonous grey of everything connected with concrete in the past, the idea was conceived of crushing these old bricks into grit, and using- them to provide a touch of colour to pavement flags. The brick grit is only applied to the half-inch layer on the uppermost side of the flagstones. These are also given a slightly rough non-slip finish which is another point In their favour,
