FULL-TIME RELIEF

Abuses Of 40-Hour Week WARNING BY MINISTER Abuses of the 40-hour week in connection with relief work have been brought to the notice of the Minister of Labour, Hon. H. T. Armstrong. He stated in an interview yesterday that instances had been reported of full-time workers accepting outside employment on Saturday, thus depriving sustenance recipients of an equivalent amount of work. "The Government Is opposed to this practice,” said the Minister, “although it is possible that the men concerned do not know of the Government’s attitude to it. I want to make it clear that the practice cannot be allowed, and that in future if any cases are brought to the notice of the Labour Department the men concerned will be withdrawn from full-time work wholly or partly financed from the Employment Promotion Fund.”
