Death By Drowning
Loss of life by drowning has sometimes been referred to as “the New Zealand death.” In 1882 a return was presented to Parliament showing that drownings in rivers between June, 1870, and June, 1882, totalled 873. No deaths by drowning at sea or on beaches were included. During the years 1840-1870, with a relatively small population, our rivers claimed. 1115 victims. —W.C.R. (Wellington).
