STRATHMORE'S VISIT
Party Of Tourists Flies Over Cook Strait Last luxury liner to visit the Do minion this summer on a short cruise from Australia, the big white I’. and <). vessel Strathmore spent yesterday at Wellington. She Perilled at p.piiea Wharf shortly after eight in the morn ing. after a fair coastal passage from Auckland. Shortly before dusk she departed on the homeward crossing to Sydney. The usual fleet of motor omnibuses and taxis met the liner on.arrival, and the tourists soon scattered on trips around the city environs. It w;,s surprising, however, bow many preyerivd to remain on board, apparently deter- ‘ mined to make their holiday a restful one, even if it meant depriving themselves of a glimpse of Welliugioii, A party of tourists specially chartered an aeroplane from Aongotai, ami spent the day flying over Cook Strait and the .Marlborough Sounds, Ititichiug in Nelson. They returned well pleased in the afternoon. This venture was something of an innovation, visitors on previous cruise ships having seen no more of the South Island than could be glimpsed from the ship's deck as she put into Wellington in the morning, or left at nightfall. In the afternoon the ship was rejoined by the 150 or so pas.-cugers who had travelled overland irom Auckland, visiting principal tourist venires eu route, on tours arranged for them by the Government Tourist Bureau. This organisation had also arranged many of the day trips round Wellington.
