NON-EMPLOYERS WHO WORK ON HOLIDAYS
Complaint Of Auckland Bakers Dominion Special Service. Auckland, March 14. A request for assistance in an endeavour to obtain legislation prohibiting undue advantage to non-employers over employers in the matter of work and conditions imposed upon manufacturers by Court of Arbitration awards was made in a letter presented at a meeting of the general committee of the Auckland -.Manufacturers’ Association from the secretary of the Auckland Master Bakers and Pastrycooks’ Association, Mr. S. S. Green. “Under the provisions of our award,” the letter stated, “baking is prohibited on 10 holidays during the year and workers receive this benefit at a considerable cost to the employers. Yet non-employers of labour are able to bake bread and deliver it. to customers on these days, taking away the customers and undermining the business of employers because of being able to give this extra service.” In addressing the meeting, Mr. Green said the court at present was limited in its power. Master bakers would appreciate the assistance of the Manufacturers’ Association in obtaining legislation necessary to remedy the matter.
