New Amendment Inserted
A safeguard to prevent petroleum mining profits being kept away from taxation is contained in a Government amendment to the Finance Bill (No. 2), which was introduced in the House of Representatives on Saturday. Explaining tbe amendment, the Minister of Finance, Hon. W. Nash, said it w r as being introduced to ensure that, if a company went out of the business of mining for petroleum and began refining and distributing, the profits it had made during the mining operations could not be kept away from taxation. The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. A. Hamilton : You may find, some more holes. “I think we have them all stopped up,” the Minister replied. The amendment was approved and the Bill was passed.
