GOVERNMENT OFFICES

Administrative Square Proposal EXPERTS PREPARING PLAN / Dominion Special Service. Napier, March 12. An important scheme for grouping all the Government’s administrative buildings round the Houses of Parliament. at Wellington was mentioned by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, in a speech before laying the foundation stone of the new Government buildings’at Napier to-day. Mr. Semple said the Government was paying an annual rent of £26,000 for office accommodation at Wellington for Government departments. Some of the accommodation was very unsatisfactory, not only from the point of view of convenience, but also for the health iof the employees.

Questioned by “The Dominion” at the conclusion of the ceremony, Mr. Semple said a'general plan for what he termed a Government administrative square was, being prepared by experts. It had long been recognised, he said, that Hie present system, under which Government departments were scattered all over the city, in many cases in premises that were unsuitable, was inconvenient and uneconomic.

Mr. Semple added that any plan evolved along these lines would involve the removal of the present Government Printing Office in Lambton Quay and the providing of a new building for the printing offices, possibly in another part of the city.
