THE MASK DROPPED
Significance Of Agreement At Berchtesgaden i (Received March 13, 7.30 p.m.) London, March 11. “Germany has abruptly dropped the flimsy mask veiling the significance of the Berchtesgaden agreement,” says the “Daily Telegraph” in a leader. "If Dr. von Schuschnigg, when he courageously announced his plebiscite plan intended to compel her to show her hand, he certainly succeeded. His position was intolerable. The plebiscite would have delayed the immediate prospect of a peaceful Anschluss. “Germany faced a situation baulking her dearest ambition, and did not hesitate to unsheath the sword. Wliat is tantamount to annexation by ultimatum at a moment’s notice cannot be excused. The claim that Austria, by reason of race, is Germany’s internal affair, is indefensible. Not a shadow remains of the independence which Germany solemly pledged Austria in 1936 and confirmed at the Berchtesgaden meeting in February.”
