Miramar Summer Cup WIN FOR W. F. STILWELL The Miramar Golf Club’s Summer Cup competition,, which has sustained interest during the summer months, was completed yesterday morning, when W. F. Second round: White beat O’Brien, 2 up; Stilwell beat Ashton, 5 and 4; Luxford beat Cornelius, 1 up; McNair beat Mooney, 6 and 4. . Final: Stilwell beat McNair, 2 up. , In the final yesterday morning Stilwell started strongly by going near to an e.‘V r le 3at the first hole. The second hole was halved, and McNair squared the game with a birdie 4at the third. The fifth was halved in bogey figures, and McNair drew ahead by taking the sixth with a bogey 3. Stilwell squared -the "ame again by brilliant play at the tricky seventh, where he hit a magnificent drixe of fully 240 yards. Pie followed this up with a spoon second, which landed his ball inches from the green, and sank a 12-foot putt for a birdie 4. The eighth was halved, and, in spite of having to concede a stroke at the ninth, Stilwell also won this hole, to turn for home 1 on strongly, Stilwell was 3 up with 4 to go, but McNair made a good fighting finish. He won the fourteenth, and the fifteenth was halved, leaving Stilwell dormy three. McNair won the sixteenth, and interest increased when he also took the seventeenth to leave Stilwell dormy one. Stilwell started off the home hole badly, but a magnificent third and a good putt enabled him to win the hole, and take the cup by 2 up. Manor Park Club The most successful opening of the winter . season ever held by the Park club took place on Saturday, when 250 players from all the Wellington clubs took part in a mixed Canadian foursome bogey. The course for this time of the year was in excellent condition. The winners of the competition were Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Mackay, who finished 3 up.. A dance was held in the clubhouse in the evening, when opportunity was taken to say farewell to Mr. and Mrs. C. Sawyers. who have been transferred to Auckland. The Summer Cup was also presented to Mias McGrath. , Yesterday Messrs. R. C. Butters and B Stratmore ran one of their popular open days, 75 competitors taking part in. competitions. Results were as follows :— 36-hole stroke gross: A. J. Shaw (scr.), 73-80-153; R. Butters, n-<6-la3. Butters won on a count-back. . 36-hole stroke net: J. A. Kelly (24), 70-70-140; H. Linley (24), 11-72-142. 18-liole stableford : H. J. Smith (15), 37: B. Breckman, 24; H. Marshall, 34, H Linley, 34; Miss M. Richmond, 34. 18-hole bogey: W. L. Burch, 1 up; L. A. Notley, 1 up. Notley won on a countback. Shandon Club The Shandon Golf Club had its official opening of the 1938 winter season, on Saturday, when 60 couples in a mixed foursome bogey competition which was won by Mr. and Mrs. AV. B. Reilly with 3 up. The weather and the course were all that could be desired. The prizes won during the summer season were presented by Mrs. Isaacs, .the wife- of the . president. The principal event, the Summer Cup, was won by Mr. B. Hipkins. . , o The bogey competitions played w. Saturday morning resulted in a tie between A. E. Clarke and G. Sutton, who finished all square. Other events resulted as fol10Fo’urball best-ball stableford: W. R. Tustin and W. Ryan, 41 points; R. Smith and S. Ward, 40 points. . . Second bogey: K. E. Wiggins, S. Ward and W. Ryan, all square. Next Saturday the first official event of the winter season will be a bogey competition, which may be played either in the morning or the afternoon. Hutt Club A bogey match on the Hutt links on Saturday was won by R. F. Jollands (8) on a count back from W. O. Gibb (15), both finishing all square. Next were A. E.‘ Park (5), 1 down; R. D. Cehandler (4), W. A. Bryden (15), J. R. Trayes (11), and G. Y. Berry (5), 2 down; K. C. Akers (15) and D. Swift (3), 3 down. A stableford competition was won by K. H. Hume, 27-10-37. The next best cards were returned by AV. G. Fisher, 34-2-36; E. Shields-Brown, 26-9-35; AV. A. Bryden, 19-15-34; G. P. Roberts, 31-2-33; J. R. Trayes, 22-11-33; R. D. AVraight, 25 u 7-32; AA r . O. Gibb, 16-15-31. The annual meeting of members of the Hutt Golf Club will be held at the clubhouse on March 23 at 8 o’clock. A fourball bogey yesterday afternoon was won by K. H. Hume (10) and AV. A. Bryden (15), with 5 up. Next were J. R. Trayes (11) and I. A. Ewen (scr.), 4 up; and G. P. Roberts (2) and G. Burt (10), 2 up. The linal of the Summer Cup was played yesterday, and resulted in, a win for C. L. Moloney, who defeated P. J. R. Fordham at the thirty-eighth. Moloney was 2 up at the end of the jporning round, but Fordham played so well in the afternoon that he was 3 up at the twenty-ninth. lu an exciitng finish they ended all square, and two more holes had to be played before'Moloney was 1 up at the thirty-eighth. Titahi Club In a medal round on the. Titahi links yesterday AV. Swinburne (6) and H. C. Boon (5) finished with 79 net. A bogey'event in the afternoon was won by AV. Swinburne (6), who finished 1 up. T. G. Taylor (12) was all square. J. Thomas, a visitor, caused some excitement by holing his tee shot at the thirteenth (140 yards). The season will be officially opened next Sunday, when all golfers will be welcomed.
