Schuschnigg’s Austrian Plebiscite “JUMPED THE GUN” Was Mussolini’s Advice Responsible? By Telegraph.—Press Assu.—Copyright (Received March 11, 12.5 a.m.) London, March 10. The British United Press correspondent at Rome says that official circles believe that Signor Mussolini advised Dr. Kurt von Schuschnigg, Austrian Chancellor, to “jump the gun” by taking the plebiscite before the Nazis’ Anschluss Day on March 27. Signor Mussolini is confident that the plebiscite will be overwhelmingly in favour of Dr. Schuschnigg, who thereafter will be in a stronger position to check pro-German activities. Paris newspapers agree that Dr. Schuschnigg has outwitted Herr Hitler and also wisely cut out the votes of turbulent youngsters by fixing the age-limit at 24 years. FRENZY OF JOY Austrian Chancellor Welcomed (Received March'll, 1.58 a.m.) . Vieiuia* March 10. Ten thousand wildly chedred Dr. von Schuschnigg when he arrived from Innsbruck. Austriaii patriots were iu a frenzy of joy as the .result of Dr. Schuschnigg’s speech, which left the Nazis flabbergasted. For the first time in four years workmen are openly wearing the red carnation emblem of democratic workers. Messages from Budapest and Prague indicate that Austria’s neighbours are tip-toe with excitement regarding the plebiscite, the climax to years of Tension.
