SOIL AND LAND SURVEYS

Investigations In Hawke’s Hay A review of soil and land utilisation surveys is contained in a report prepared by the chairman of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. The mapping of soils in Hawke’s Bay, the report states, is now centred in the qrea#between Napier and Wairoa, in (vhich the soils are derived from •the Taupo and old Taupo pumice deposits. This is the last important section of the Hawke’s Bay province to be completed and has already been covered by the farm management survey. An officer of the Soil Survey Division is assisting the farm management survey in selecting locations for observational topdressing experiments, which are of primary importance in following up, confirming and developing the findings of the main surveys. A preliminary survey of some of the flax (phormium) soils of New Zealand has been carried out. and a survey of the Aburiri lagoon soils is to be undertaken in association with the.chemical section of the Department of Agriculture.
