OBITUARY
Mr. William Ayson A colourful page of Otago history is recalled by the death of Mr William Avson, of the Southbrook Estate, Waikaka, aged 97, a Dunedin P.A. message Arriving in Otago in the ship Royal Albert in 1853. as a boy oF 13 he experienced all the hardships of those early days. At the age of 95 he travel-, led by air, en route to Tauranga. ’ Mr. J. Y. Hannay The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr. John Young Hannay at the age-of 95 years, says a ‘•Dominion special service message from Napier. Born at Belfast in 1843, Mr. Htnmaj came to New Zealand at the age of 1, in the ship Indian Empire. He saw service in the Maori Wars with Jacksons Forest Rangers in the Waikato. Mr Hannay had lived at Napier for the past 60 years. He leaves two sons and four daughters. Mr. J. Hill The death occurred at Waipukurau ' recently of Mr. J. Hill, .Tavistock Road, at thb age of 49 years, states a “Dominion” Special Service message. Born at Woodville in ISB9, Mr. Hili whs educated in that town and at Dannevirke. He enlisted in 1914 and left New Zealand with the 6th Reinforcements as a sergeant in the engineers. He saw active service in the Balkans, Gallipoli, Egypt and Western Europe, and was awarded the 1914-la Star, the Bri’tish War Medal and the Victory Medal. At the conclusion of the war Mr. Hill ' came to Waipukurau and entered business at-the Waipukurau Dairy Factory. After about two years, however, he sold out and began as a' building contractor, and was responsible for the erection of many prominent buildings , In the town. f He was an ardent .sportsman and angler, and was well known in Rugby football circles both as a player and referee. He was a member of the Waipukurau Bowling Club, the Waipukurau Golf Club,, the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows, and wjas a Fast Master of the Masonic Lodge. He was also formerly a member of the Waipukurau Brass Band, and was the first chairman of the Home and School League. He leaves a widow and family of four young children, and is survived by his mother and father, two sisters, Miss Hill and Mrs. A. J. Berryman, Palmerston North, and-three brothers, Mr. William Hill, Wellington, Mr. T. Hill, Hastings, and Mr. R. Hill, Morrinsville. His funeral was largely attended, and the services were conducted by Canon E. D. Rice and Canon C. Mor-timer-Jones. At the graveside the Masonic service of farewell was conducted, and the “Last Post’* 1 was sounded by Mr. J. Russell. The pallbearers, all Past Masters of the Bedford Lodge, were Messrs. J. W. Elliott, J. Wharmby, E. C. Hurdsfield, H. T. Mcßoberts, F.* E. Mcßoberts and C. R. Edgecombe;
