OLYMPIC GAMES

Attitude Of Japan Toldo, March 8. The Olympic Committee complains that the reply by the Minister of War, General Sugiyama, to a suggestion by members of the Seiyukai Party that, if a Mobilisation Bill becomes necessary, the Government should suspend the holding of the Olympic Games in 1940, was misrepresented in the Japanese Press and was consequently misquoted in the foreign Press.. The committee says that shorthand notes give the reply as follows: “The China incident may or may not have ended. The 1940 Games may be held on a lesser scale than contemplated. The Games will not be'held in Japan in the event of a still graver incident.”

According to a previous cablegram from Tokio, General Sugiyama said that the games would be held if the China incident had terminated. Vice-Admiral Suctsugu qualified the statement by saying that though Japan had ample resources to hold both the Olympic Games and the world fair these would be dropped if the situation became more tense.
