Sunday was the coldest day experienced in Hawke’s Bay since well before Christmas. The district was swept by a cold southerly wind which at times reached gale force. The wind was accompanied by a sudden general drop in temperature all over the province. In Napier a large poplar tree in the council yards in Carlyle Street was blown down, falling across telephone wires and cutting off the toll services to the towns uortjj of Napier until 2.30 p.m. Although orchards in the district were heavily buffeted, there were many windfalls, but no serious losses have been reported.
