BRITAIN AND FRANCE
Close Consultation As In Past (British Official Wireless.) (Received March 4, 7.30 p.m.) Rugby, March 3. Mr. G. Le M. Mauder (Liberal) asked the Prime Minister, Mr. Chamberlain, in the House of Commons whether France had been consulted by Britain and had agreed with the view that under the existing conditions the collective system of the League could not be considered as operative regarding Article 16 of the Covenant, and whether France had been consulted and had agreed to negotiations between BrL tain, France, Germany and Italy, excluding Russia, for a general European settlement. Mr. Chamberlain replied: “If Mr. Mander will look at the reports of my statements on February 21 and February 22 he will find a full expression of my opinion. I do not accept in all respects the interpretation which he places on my remarks. There is no proposal at present so far as I am aware of the kind to which he refers. “I need hardly repeat what has been made plain on more than one occasion —that Britain intends, as in the past, to remain in close consultation with France in all matters of common concern to the two Governments.”
