Vice-Regal. His Excellency the Governor-General received Mr. C. E. Critchley, M.8.E., the new Australian Trade Commissioner, and Mr. J. L. Menzies, Assistant Australian Trade Commissioner, at Government House yesterday morning. Sir Cyril Ward, who will make a business visit to Great Britain and the Continent, has been granted five months’ leave of absence by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. Sir Hector Duff, formerly chief secretary to the Nyasaland Government and Acting-Governor and Commander-in-Chief, is due to arrive at Auckland by the Brisbane Star from Liverpool on March 15. Sir Hector was admitted a barrister of the Inner Temple after he returned to England from South Africa in 1919. Mr. John Farrell will leave Wellington to-morrow night for the nortk. Mr. H. W. Watts, Cambridge, is spending a holiday in Wellington. Mr. H. G. Logie, Christchurch, left Wellington yesterday for Auckland by the Limited express. Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Phillips, Lower Hutt, left by the Limited express last night on a visit to Auckland. Mr. E. Palliser, Wellington, was a passenger to Auckland by last night’s Limited express. Mr. G. T. Mason returned to Wellington yesterday after visiting the South Island. Mr. Lloyd Hammond has been appointed a member of the New Zealand Wool Committee. Dr. F. A. H. Neate, Timaru, arrived at Wellington from the south yesterday by the steamer express. Mr. J. M. Fraser, Christchurch, left by the steamer express on his return south last night. Mr. C. L. M. Kaye, Christchurch, who has been visiting Wellington, returned south last night. Mr. C. E. Robertson, of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., left for the north by the Limited express last night. Mr. E. E Casey, Assistant General Manager of Railways, arrived at Wellington from Auckland by the Limited express yesterday. Mr. S. L. Moses, general manager of the Maple Furnishing Company, was a passenger to Auckland by the Limited express from Wellington last night. Mr. H. E. Moston, C.8.E., has been elected chairman of the Royal Wellington Choral Union for the fifth year in succession. Mr. William McKenzie, New Plymouth, has been appointed a member of the Taranaki (Rural) Adjustment Commission. Mr. H. J. Bishop, assistant secretary of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, returned to Wellington yesterday after visiting Auckland. Mr. Gilbert Archey, director of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, arrived at Wellington from the north yesterday. He will return to Auckland toward the end of next week. Mr. Robert McKeen, M.P., and Mrs. McKeen returned to Wellington yesterday. Mr. McKeen was a delegate to the recent municipal conference at New Plymouth. Flying Officer K. Smith, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, now stationed at Christchurch, has been appointed instructor to the Waikato Aero Club. He will take up his new duties next week. The Rev. W. Phillips, formerly of Katikati, who is at present returning to New Zealand from a visit to England, has been appointed Presbyterian minister for the East Coast district. Mr. Stanley L. Laing, who fo r the last seven years has been secretary to the board of Messrs. Cadbury, Fry, Hudson, Ltd., has now been appointed a director of this company. Mr. Peter Dearing, stage director of the “Victoria Regina” Company, arrived at Wellington yesterday to attend to production arrangements. The company will arrive from Masterton today. Mr. W. O’Connor, headmaster of the Christchurch Normal School since 1935, has been appointed an Inspector of Native Schools in the Education Department, stationed at Wellington. He will leave Christchurch next month. Mr. A. Aubrey, managing director of the Southern Cross Assurance Co., Ltd., head office, Melbourne, will leave Wellington bj’ the Limited express to-night to connect with the Aorangi, which sails from Auckland on Monday for Sydney.
