Modern Needlework
Decorative Stitcliery Can Be Quickly Done QUICKLY done decorative stitches and bold applique designs, relieved with a certain amount of fine needlecraft, are the vogue at the present day. Eace and fabrics in which the manufactured design is so artistic that it lends itself to further embellishment by means of hand embroidery or hand painting, brocades with metallic effects, and even synthetic plastic glass, a comparatively recent achievement of scientists, can be brought into play by the embroidery worker with original ideas. Where superimposed materials are introduced the general trend is toward a direct simplicity in design, and the work becomes creative needlecraft, with a definite appeal to the artistic needlewoman with the gift of spontaneous expression. Planning colour schemes is perhaps the most exciting part, and here tone values should be considered as important as colour harmony. A good design is essential, particularly in classic embroidery, when many hours of stitcliery are involved.
