BOOKMAKING ON RACECOURSE
Woman’s Second Offence By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, March 4. On a summons charge of being found unlawfully on Ellerslie racecourse. Eileen Lucy Satchell appeared in the Magistrates’ Court before Mr. C. IL Orr-Walker, S.M., and pleaded guilty. “This woman was caught carrying on the occupation of a bookmaker at Ellerslie on January 29, the first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meeting,’’ said Detective-Sergeant McHugh. “She appeared in this court on January 31, when she was fined £5 for bookmaking. Despite the fact that she was warned not to continue this illegal occupation, she immediately left the racecourse and again carried on betting.” The magistrate: Did she leave when told to?—“She was put oft' the course.” A teaidjil plea to the magistrate was made by defendant. “I borrowed some money to pay the fine and I only went out to try and get enough to pay back what I had borrowed.” she said./ “It was rather cheeky to go hack to the racecourse and bet again after you were convicted and warned.” the magistrate told the woman; She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six: months, and was warned that if she offended again during that time the consequences would be serious.
