THE PLUNKET SHIELD

Averages For Past Season AUCKLAND’S GOOD RECORD (By Burwood. ) The batting and bowling averages in this season’s Phinket Shield cricket series serve to emphasise Auckland’s supremacy. No fewer than live Auckland batsmen had averages of 50 and over, and W. N. Carson obtained an even 49. The colt, V. Scott, led the way with 207 runs in three innings, which, with one not out, gives him the splendid average of 103-aO. Whitelaw, I’ostles, Weir, Wallace and Carson all did well with the bat. Of the Wellington men, M. I. Donnelly, the Taranaki left-hander, headed the Wellington averages with 192 m six innings, at an average of 32. E. W. Tindill also had an average of just over 30, and Ward and Pritchard djd creditably, but • the other batsmen tailed off rather bajjl.Y- . , , . . Thunks to a century in both innings in the match against Auckland, K. T. M. Uttley, the captain, heads the Otago batting averages with 420 runs, the highest aggregate of the season, at the good average of 70 an innings. Canterbury, like Wellington, were very, weak in batting. D. N. Stokes, the only player on the side to aggregate 200 runs, headed the averages with 33.33, as a result of six visits to the crease. In the bowling department, most wickets were taken bv J. A. Dunning (Otago), who captured 20 for 352 runs at an average of 17.10 a wicket. He . sent down 112.2 overs, and bowled 33 maidens. He was head and shoulders above any other Otago bowler, Silver coming next with nine wickets at 26.11 runs each. J. Cowie, the Auckland fast bowler, did well with 18 wickets at an average of 1j.44. A. M. Matheson captured 10 wickets at an average of 28.30, and. by a coincidence, both the Auckland fast bowlers sent down about the same number of overs. Cowie bowling 106 and Matheson 105. W. N. Carson lent good support with eight wickets for 136, which placed him at the bead of the Auckland bowling averages, with 17 runs a wicket. T. L. Pritchard was the outstanding bowler on the Wellington side, with 15 wickets for 227 runs, an average of 15.13. M. Browne, the Karori slow bowler, who played only in the match against Otago at Dunedin, did well to take nine wickets at a cost of 14.11 each. N. Gallichnn, the Manawatu slow left-hander, who played only in the match against Canterbury, headed the Wellington bowling averages with seven wickets at a cost of 10.85 runs a wicket. Pritchard bore the brunt of the Wellington attack, as he sent down 77.6 overs, Parsloe coming next with 38.6 overs. E_. T. Mulcock, the leg-theory specialist, was easily the best of the Canterbury bowlers, capturing twice as many wickets as any other trundler on the side. He sent down 83.1 overs, off which he took 16 wickets at an average of 14.50 runs a wicket. Auckland called upon 15 men for the shield matches, Wellington 17, and Otago and Canterbury 13 each.
