Eastbourne To Contribute To Art Gallery Upkeep The council should be the leader in all directions intended for the uplift of the people, said Cr. M. E. Magill at last night’s Eastbourne Borough Council meeting, in moving that the council contribute to the National Art Gallery and Memorial Museum on the basis agreed on of twopence a head of population for one year, the position to be reviewed at the end of that period. There was .no need to wait and see what other bodies did, said Cr. Magill. The motion was carried. The council’s contribution is £3O.
Establishment of Library. The council’s action in an endeavour to secure the establishment of a local library under the national scheme was asked for in a letter received by the Eastbourne Borough Council last night from
the local branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, which stated that the director of the national library scheme had taken up his duties. Cr. M. E. Magill pointed out that a sub-committee had been appointed some time ago on her suggestion to discuss this question. It had not yet met, but would do so shortly. The letter was referred to the suh-eommittee. * ,
Hospital Board Representative. The appointment of the mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. W. Andrews, as second representative of the joint council of the boroughs of Lower Hutt and Eastbourne on the Wellington Hospital Board was approved by the Eastbourne Borough Council last night.
